Dr. Crystal Harden
It is my honor and privilege to share with you my expertise in science education particularly my passion for creating and designing equitable spaces and practices that impact and inspire the minds of young people. I have over 30 years of experience working in formal and informal science center environments and state government settings.
My Story
My love for science developed in high school. It continued at North Carolina Central University as well as in my graduate school experiences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In my current positions as a director and adjunct professor, I manage statewide programs and access initiatives where I collaborate with faculty, researchers, educators, students, and communities to develop and implement accessible STEM curricula for broadening participation in STEM. My course teaching experience ranges from social justice in education to relevant pedagogy in science education. My previous research interest has focused on the science identity of rural, middle school, Black girls. Being a Black women from a rural community, the strategies and practices implemented in these areas that encourage and support science equity and identity are very important to me. This work is not a career for me - it is a calling.
